FEAR AND DOUBT ARE A CAVE

A Hard Winter I’ve had a hell of a winter. A lot of life-changing, life-affirming, and life-questioning events. I’m trying to get back into the swing of things, but as usual I am my own worst enemy. My inner monologue the loudest voice among the crowd. I took a trip down through the Central Coast … Continue reading

Strangers in the Night – Pacing the 2017 Rio Del Lago 100

The call came in via Facebook. Someone I had never met, asking for pacers at the 2017 Rio Del Lago 100 mile event. She was confident of a finish, but wanted the push of a pacer, and the safety of someone else should something go wrong. I signed on the dotted line and that was … Continue reading

Western States Dreams at The 2017 Cuyamaca 100K

With a heavy heart and rested feet from the Tahoe 200 failure,  I was ready to go for my second big goal of the year: a lotto ticket for the Western States at the Cuyamaca 100K. I had originally signed up for the event hours before Annika was born – sitting in a chair next … Continue reading

Run Till You Die

Run Till You Die This is terrible advice. Then again… the alternative is worse. “I can’t do that.” I hate hearing “I could never do that! Its way farther than I could run.” Maybe they’ll talk about a 10k, a half marathon or even a marathon they’re training for…months down the road. Coach Travis, and … Continue reading

Embrace the Mud – 2017 Grizzly Peak 50K Race Report

Around the beginning of April, my wife and I were expecting the arrival of our second bundle of 3 am feedings and diaper changes, but madness still called my name. If I don’t run I go bonkers, the Siren’s call of the trail beckoned. Liz had run the Coastal Trail Run Big Basin 50K last … Continue reading

2017 Marin Ultra Challenge 50 Mile Race Report

A New Year, A New Adventure I knew I wanted to start my year off with a good strong race, especially one I had not run before in a place I had not spent a lot of time. I love Sonoma, Folsom, Auburn, the Sierras, and the rest of the Great Golden State, but I … Continue reading

The Tahoe Rim Trail 100 – A Voyage Among The Stars

When I first fell in love with ultra running, I was doing laps around Kandahar Air Field behind a chain link fence, through clouds of dust kicked up convoys going to and coming from hell.

There were no bears, rattlesnakes, mountain lions or skunks to run from. Instead I broke protocol and ran through the darkness along a stretch of road called snipers alley – a place where only a long passage of chain link fence separates you from the outside world and a sniper could pick you off with little effort.

There was no finish line for my first ultra. I ran through the night, under the blanket of darkness over the war-zone until I ran over 30 miles after the sun rose again. There was no beer, no burritos, no celebration; only a tent with dodgy air conditioning and work the next day. Continue reading

East Coast Wanderings & Hell Hath No Hurry 50K – Getting ready for a taste of hell

…It had been 12 years since the last time I been up there, long before I was who I am now, and certainly before I was a runner. The mixed memories of my youth left me with a view that was grander than what lay before me. It was a sublime moment of reflection. Our memories of the past are often minimal when seen through the eyes our future selves…. Continue reading
