Gear Checklist

  • Race day clothing. Wear your least favorite gear in your taper runs the days before – pack your race day stuff now!
    • Shirt
    • Shorts
    • Leggings
    • Pull-overs/jacket (prepare for the expected weather, but plan for the unexpected.)
    • Pants
    • With regard to warm clothes – regardless of mid day temperatures, early morning race starts can be cold. Check for start/finish drop bags. Even if you do not need a jacket/pants for the race itself, they might be nice for before/after a race.
  • Footwear – Sandals, socks, whatever.
  • Hydration. Don’t leave your bottle in the dishwasher on race morning! Packs, vests, or bottles – get them ready to go.
  • Nutrition. Test anything new on training runs before race day. Figure out race day caloric needs based on temperature, effort, aid station distances, etc. Get to REI, or your local running store and stock up early and get it packed, bring extras.
    • Big calories – bars, granola, etc
    • Gels/gummies/quick snacks
    • Electrolytes – Pills or mixes
    • Gum/ginger chews/candy for the long hikes

    • Toilet paper/wipes in small bag
    • Ibuprofen
    • Imodium
    • Extra shoelace/sandal straps,
    • Beer, boom stick, etc.
  • Drop bags. Plan them out, peck them, and get them labeled before race morning.
    • For Start/Finish drop bags, consider clothes, baby wipes, a warm jacket (even if the weather is nice!), food, cell phone battery pack – The walk to your car may feel longer after the race than it did before!
  • Extra safety pins – throw a bundle of 4 in there.

Are you going for a long weekend? Be prepared for the uncertain when you’re away from home and someplace new.

  • Compression socks/leggings for recovery (if that’s your thing).
  • Sandals or comfortable footwear to accommodate post-race swelling (even if you’re ‘bulletproof’ bad days still happen)
